Evo Forest - Awareness-raising and Protection of Southern Finland Forest Biotopes 1.5.2002 - 30.9.2005

Evo Natura 2000 area is 7 860 hectares, of which Kotinen and Sudenpesänkangas nature reserves form 692 ha. There is also other smaller conservation areas and key biotopes protected by Finnish forest and environmental legislation. About half on the Natura area is under normal forestry management.  One fifth of the area is privately owned where as the rest is state-owned by the Metsähallitus (Finnish Forest and Park Service).

The Evo Natura 2000 area is a mosaic formed by forest, lakes, brooks and mires. The most valuable parts of this area are unbuilt shores of lakes and ponds and the old growht forest of Kotinen and Sudenpesänkangas.  These old forests are nature reserves, where endangered species dependant  on aspen and coarse woody debris still exist. At Evo, there is a strong continuity in burned areas and charred wood, which is rare in Finland because of forest were treated by slash- and burn agriculture in the 19ht century. Later on silvicultural prescribed burnings carried out in the area

Evo-Life project improved living conditions of endangered species in Evo Natura 2000 area ecspecially  in theses areas, witch were earlier managed by silvicultural purposes. The project planted aspen,  lime and goat willow sapling, made dead wood, took away individuals of exotic tree species, burned forests, blocked spruce swamps ditches and restored rapids of Keltaoja brook. Also 132 hectares land parcel was purchased for nature conservation purposes.

Project has informed about its actions and produced material for schools. The project was co-ordinated by Häme Polytechnic University of Applied Sciences. It received financial support from the Life Nature program of European Union.
